Wow...getting this track done was a BEAST. But it was a great learning experience to get some real writing done with people over the miles. Not just people...but my best friends. This has been a real connection with people I truly care about...and it's been very emotional to see this through to this stage.
The song started out as a Hank VanRanden acoustic guitar piece, and the minute he played it - I KNEW where it had to go. It moved me from the first few seconds. The words and the melody came together fairly quickly and jointly with the flow of the song, and then over the next few days, I fine tuned the lyrics.
For some reason, after I completed it...I lost a lot of hope. I just felt like no one was really paying attention to all this work...and I didn't even want to record it anymore. And this song morphed from an idea to something incredibly personal and how I was feeling towards the end of February - with a return to Michigan that I wasn't REALLY excited about...the potential loss of a lifelong dream to move out west...all that stuff. So the words became kind of an assurance to myself that even though I was down...I was certainly not out.
I sent the track to my long time friends and bandmates Jonny Victor and Darin Christian (who is also my cousin)...and they really gave me a boost of confidence to finish the song, especially Jonny. He sent back the absolutely wonderful piano and string arrangements that you hear here, and Darin gave me some VERY useful mixing tips and suggestions on certain aspects of the song. It gave this song a whole new life for me.
I truly hope this song finds the people that need it. As not just a songwriter, but as a human being, my biggest hope is that I can somehow make life better for people that know me, or hear me, or enjoy any of the art I do.
